My cross platform game engine uses FTGL and freetype for fonts. I've actually accelerated FTGL quite substantially when I modified it to use a OpenGLES compliant API (changes work with vanilla GL as well). Which reminds me, I should upload those patches to FTGL group. FTGL is platform independant, I had no issues porting it to Haiku.
