It's the whole "Long Tail" thingy that all the cool nerd bloggers have been ranting about for the past couple of months. The Internet has grown so much and encompasses so many different groups of people that there's literally a market for anything. MUDs, MOOs, naked pics of 600 lb. women, whatever. That's why I'm torn on this subject. I've heard similar arguments from my friends in the game industry, but I have a hard time believing that it's much more than "grass is always greener" moaning.
