Just a suggestion. How long have you tried leaving the mail to open? I have seen a similar problem before and is was actually caused by a network problem rather that email. If left for several hours Outlook would eventually open the mail and attachment. In my case it was a routing problem between sites that was causing the mail to go out over the wan to come back in again. Therefore very slow to open.
