Kevin and Sean, You are both right, however partially. Sean is right in that the "no MIDI device attached/selected" message has everything to do with what type ofMIDI interface, either internal or external midi card you plan on using yourcomputer/Sonar to communicate through, (e.g. sound blaster, edirol um,etc.), and not the keyboard or module being used for input/output. The part about which musical instrument you use for actually playing and / or hearingsounds comes under selecting an instrument to go with your MIDI device asfar as Sonar and your computer are concerned-- two different things: 1. mididevice; 2. instrument definition. So if we limit ourselves to the "no midi device attached/selected" message then we can say Dave you don't need to physically connect your keyboard before choosing a device. However in Dave's specific case since he plans on going through USB for his midi needs then one has to say yes indeed he would first have to connect hismidi keyboard before choosing a device because his midi device and midi musical instrument are all in one. I hope that helps. Merry Christmas to you all, Nicki D -----Original Message-----From: ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] OnBehalf Of Kevin L. He's talking about the MIDI devices dialog in sonar and that expects a keyboard on the input side and modules or the output of the keyboard on the output side. So, yes, his device is a keyboard. The audio connections are irrelevant to this. They need to be connected via Midi or USB. So, yes, you have to connect your USB keyboard before you connect select an input device. What it is asking for, is the deviceyou use to connect your MIDI in and outs to your computer such as an FW1884 or a SoundBlaster Live etc. If you purchased your system from Dancing Dots, give them a call and find out what device you purchased. If not, Feel free to give me a call and I'll be happy to guide you through finding out. Sincerely, Sean A. But now my wife wants results from all the dough I've sunk into this stuff. I'm using Sonar 5.2 with the appropriate CakeTalking scripts. When I load Sonar 5, I get a message saying I don't have any MIDI device chosen. I assume this would be the keyboard which is indeed not hooked up yet. I have a cable that will let me hook up the keyboard via USB. Does it have to be connected for me to choose a MIDI device?Couldn't I just plug the keyboard in using a quarter inch plug throughthe mixer? But then how would I choose a MIDI device? HELP!
