Thanks for that. The plughw thing seems to work but lost the streamduring
a 3 houre show, not sure why and need to do some more testing. Willenable

On a earlier machine we had "random" hangs of the USB audio kernel module
stack which happen some weeks or several day or some weeks. THe only way to
get the device working was reconnecting the USB plug or (remotely) unload
alsa
and all snd modules down to snd-usb-audio and reload it.
We had this problems long time with a (today very old) Creative
Soundblaster
USB. After switching over to a E-MU USB (which had an XLR stereo couple the
problem was gone. For me it seems the USB driver and/or the device was
running
into a undefined state leading to hang the whole stack.
We use today:
Creative E-MU 0404 USB Audio/MIDI Interface
(just to "record" / AD the radio stream into darkice) which seems to work
properly and without any breaks/hangs anymore. I've seen problems on
machines
with the same device where the runtime bug seems to be related to the
kernel
version and/or build options (suboptimal for the underlying x86/amd64
hardware).
On the regarding system with the Soundblaster we restart our stream
including
the USB sound subsystem each night, because it seems it helped a bit that
time
to avoid any "overruns" of the system or some pointer within. Not shure if
that helps you too as a ugly workaround.
I would try to work with different kernel module options and kernel builds
if
possible and/or contact the alsa developer list if you find the problem not
within darklice. For now, pls send us a darkice log (and look for any
dmesg /
kernel log output which regard to it...
good luck,
Niels.
