Just a small shot in the dark:

MP3 is specified as 16bit, so Lame has to produce 16 bit mp3 out of the 24 bit 
interface (i.e. by cutting the half of the bits of a sample).

Tried vorbis and got same error. So are you saying I cant use the E-MU 0404 with darkice?
