The societal issue involving the internet I chose is spyware. I had heard the
term however was not familiar with what it was. After a few minutes of
reading, I thought it was important especially with all the downloading I do.
I got a lot of information from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyware.
Spyware by definition is "computer software that is installed surreptitiously
on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user's
interaction with the computer, without the user's informed consent. I didn't
realize the extent to what this meant. Spyware is basically anything unwanted
on your computer. Some of this unwanted stuff such as adware or advertising
pop ups is not harmful, however some is very harmful to your computer. Without
anti-spyware on your computer it could be susceptible to spyware attaching to
files and multiplying. Some of the many negative outcomes of spyware are
identity theft/fraud, poor computer function, unwanted ads including
pornographic material, invasion of privacy etc.
