Hi Linda,

I have had an Apex since 2010. I have found it better than the mPower in
terms of portability and other hardware factors. Firstly, the battery is
user replaceable which means she would not have to send it in for battery
replacement alone. Secondly, the unit is lighter and thinner. Although the
Apex does not do everything one would like, it does provide the ability to
read docx files which is important for most people. It allows for much
better connectivity choices in terms of braille terminal. As far as I
understand, the mPower cannot connect to an I device through Bluetooth which
the Apex can. I use this feature myself. You can connect to your computer
through USB or Bluetooth for braille terminal. It depends on the student's
needs, but I think those are a few points to consider. Also, you would have
to consider the availability of parts for future repair of the mPower. I
live in Australia, but I realise these things can be quite expensive.
Another point to consider is that software is only being made for the Apex.

Alana

Subject: [BNU] Empower vs apex

I have a 14 year old student who has had an empower for about 5 years. She
has seen/used the apex at a visit to the school for the blind and naturally
wants the latest and greatest. (Don't we all!) but her family does not
contribute anything to her technology needs, and the school is strapped for
money.
(Another obvious fact.) What are some opinions on the need to up grade to an
Apex or continue to use the empower for this student- She is fully included
in the regular ed curriculum. average intelligence, sense of entitlement,
little appreciation for all that is provided for her to access the
curriculum.

I need to provide input to my supervisor.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate.
