Sue, As Shelley said, volunteers will have to join the list in order to receive the messages to the list. However, they can go to the Free Lists website and do a search for them if they don't want to subscribe. That will be one of the benefits of generating the message using a form. It will have a consistent subject which can be searched for. Jake and I suggested something like Book Request - title, so you could search for Book Request to find them all in the archives and allow specific requests to be identified by their subject instead of having to read the message to know what book the message is about. Another reason Jake and I suggested the consistent subject was to allow people to filter out the requests if they didn't want to see them. Any message with Book Request at the beginning of the subject could be deleted upon arrival or moved to a folder which would hold nothing but the requests. People really need to join, though, since the only way to inform others that you're scanning the book would be to reply to the message or send another message out to the list. Jake and I also suggested copying the person making the request when the message is generated by the website to allow us to see if someone is sending the same request over and over or if we get a bunch of requests from different people. If that's done, then the volunteer who offers to scan the book can "reply to all" to also inform the person making the request that the book will be scanned. Also, it's my understanding that requests will be going to the bookshare-discuss list, because that's what I heard from Lisa. It's possible that Engineering could end up sending it to either one when they implement the form, though. It depends on whether or not the staff is specific when they specify the change to Engineering or simply say the discussion list like John did when he wrote the lists about the upcoming change. BTW, the reason for the change is because the staff is having trouble finding the time to maintain the list. They discovered when they made the effort recently to keep it up and not let it slide that it takes a lot more time now that Bookshare has more members. I think we'll find that at some point, too, that it will have to be dropped altogether since there will even be too many requests sent to the discussion list for the list to function. People will unsubscribe due to the high volume of messages. That's another reason why I think Lisa had the bookshare-discuss list in mind. It has less message traffic, and subscribers won't have to receive all of the threads on volunteering. This isn't a perfect solution, but it's better than dropping the Wish List altogether now. If the requests are sent to this list, how will volunteers who are not on the list see the requests? That happens to be what Bookshare is planning to do with their Wish List in the near future. Instead of the staff taking requests for books and adding them to the Wish List, they plan to replace the list with a form which will send requests directly to this list.
