hello,
jackie has a legitimate concern here. i have a bc right now. i've had it
since it came out. yes, the unit is good. but it's ridicolous to say that
something else might not be available. the acb and nfb conventions are
coming up, and there is a company called triumph with some products out
there. if my bc broke and there was no support for it any more, i'd just
think about the bookport which is being supported. and by the way, do we
know if the bc broke tomorrow if you could get it fixed. in three years if
jackie's bookcourier breaks then, will she be able to get it fix ? most
people don't have $400.00 to just give away on a product, which is obselete
one month later.
when sighted people buy products, they don't go out and get old things that
are obselete unless they just want to. in fact, you can look at consumer
reports and other magazines if you want to know what is coming up. when an
item is being discontinued, you don't see them in stores anymore and there
is usually a discount on the price of the unit so the stores can get rid of
them.
so why is it a big deal when visually impaired or blind people wonder about
whether they have spent the wrong money, they are told so what? it's a good
unit. i think this is just plain wrong. this is particularly so when we pay
so much more money for things then sighted people do anyway.

Hi Jackie,

Springer, I believe, will be servicing BCs for some time to come. And as to
whether you bought the wrong thing, do you know anything better for the job?
I certainly don't. So if that's the case, that $400 is an investment. When
you buy a mobile phone, and they discontinue it after six months usually, as
they do in the UK, you don't find people saying they bought the wrong thing,
just because they discontinued it? Come on please people, stop getting
alarmist, and enjoy what your BC does so well now. My only concern in all
this, is when the supply dries up, and you can't get them any more.

Hi,

I too have kept the RFBD beta, although I have not tried to use it for RFB
and D books since the testing period petered out. I too am very
disappoikted that Springer Design is no longer interested in Book Courier.
I feel like maybe I spent $400 on the wrong thing now. Fortunately, mine
still works, as I have not tried any new updates since the beta.

Is Springer servicing Book Couriers?

If this is done what about making it open source so work could continue?

This is indeed unfortunate. Certainly its springer's right to
move on to another product. However the process here was not
quite fair. Springer has probably known about this for weeks if
not months. meanwhile, people have been trying to decide what to
do about there reading and listening needs. should I buy the bc,
bookport or milestone? maybe people still might like the bc, but
wouldn't it have been fair if they could have made their decision
knowing that nothing more would be done to the bc to improve it.
even microsoft, the company many love to hate announces when its
not supporting windows verssions anymore.
many people have asked the question on the list whether springer
was going to stop upgrading the bc. Every answer I saw was "no"
last december or january we were asked to participate in beta
testing for rfb books to be loded onto the bc. In fact a new
list was created for that purpose. I loaded the beta software
but never tried to participate in the process as I had some
difficulty getting rfb to acknowledge the consent form I sent
three times. But I left the beta software on my device as I
never received any notification that the beta period was at an
end.
a new upgrade came out and a message was sent which advised that
if you were wanting to participate in the beta for rfb you should
not upgrade to the latest software revision of the bc. since
that time, I have not done anything to my bc because I was
waiting to see if a new upgrade would be coming out after the
beta period with the rfb capability part of it. its rare that a
company would beta test and then just drop the ball and say
weeare off to another product. See you.
we have not heard anything from springer until yesterday when
katie made her announcement. until that time there was a long
silence from springer. so I did have a feeling this was going to
happen. consequently, I told someone the other day that perhaps
he should not buy a bc until we heard whether there were going to
be continuing improvements with the device because as many have
pointed out there is room for improvements.
