Dear Volunteers:

I am writing to tell you about a pet peeve of mine. I have noticed that every time someone posts that they've rejected a book, there's always emails in response saying that the person shouldn't have. Speaking for myself, I do not reject a book lightly. If I really don't feel like dealing with the book I release it. I only reject books that I feel would take less time to rescan. Some might say that the collection loses out on a potential gem. I will argue that if said book is that important someone will take the time to rescan it.

As for rejecting books due to lack of page breaks, doing so is following bookshare policy. It has been 1 year since Bookshare has instituted the policy of page breaks. In my opinion that's plenty of time for submitters to learn to follow the rules. Validators spending many hours adding page breaks is setting a bad precedent for submitters. They don't follow the rules and yet their books still get accepted. Remember submitters get the major credit for submitting the books and yet conscientious validators get the grunt work and little to show for it.

Frankly I don't post on the list when I reject books because of the negative responses over time. I don't enjoy rejecting books at all. I only do when it's necessary. Additionally if the reason for rejecting is not valid the admin kicks it back and says to validate it. I have seen it happen before. Also, nothing prevents the submitter from cleaning the book up and resubmitting it. .

As Mickey stated all we want to do is a good job. And in this case she was following Bookshare policy.

Although some people may prefer quantity over quality, the community does prefer quality over quantity on the aggregate, as observed on a previous bookshare survey. This includes proper pagination as well as clear readable text. Therefore spending countless hours saving every book is not always the best way to use our valuable time. Perhaps if less time was spent cleaning up scanning messes more books could be added to the collection.

This is my 2 cents worth for today, or perhaps even the whole month. *grin*

Grace

I get very confused. When I've released books because they didn't have page breaks, I was told I should have rejected them. When I reject, I'm told I should have kept. We need guidelines, because either way I go, someone figures I should have done it differently. All I want to do is do a good job. Maybe we can get Gustavo to put it back, since I told him what the reason was.

Aah, Mickey. If you'd released it, I could have taken
it it. The book, at least in a couple of forms, is
available in my library systems, and it looks like one
I'd enjoy reading--and it's relatively short. smile.

Hi. I had to reject Rutland Place by Anne Perry.
There were no detectable
page breaks.

Good scan, too.
