Hi Patti,
One thing I often do is rest my forearm along the spine of the book while I'm
scanning and lean some weight on it. It's easier for me than trying to mash the
binding down with my hand. It's good to find something fun to occupy your brain
while scanning, since scanning is the kind of mindless chore that would be
perfect for an automaton. Also, if you find holding the book down tedious,
trying just scanning for a set period of time, like 10 or 15 minutes at a time.
When you see how much better the results are, you'll probably decide it's
worthwhile. A lot of times I can get in the scanning rhythm and whip through
several hundred pages without even realizing it. Does Openbook have a setting
that will automatically scan every so many seconds which you can set? Kurzweil
has this option, and I love to use it. Also, you can probably set your scanning
margins so that the scanning bar only goes as far as necessary--this saves some
time. Even if it's only 1 second per scan it adds up.
