Hi Patti, 

I will second this. Keeping a clean scanning bed or scanning heads does make
a big difference. I have mentioned before having a very small spot of
something on the glass will break words in the middle or add and "I" in the
scan.

Patti,
One low-tech possibility could be that the scanner needs a bath. <grin> They
can get dust and fingerprints etc on them after a while. It's good to use a
glasscleaner, like maybe that kind of Windex that has vinegar in it. I've
heard you shouldn't use normal Windex, but I usually do and I get very clean
scans.
