That was a very good explanation; thank you.

Hi Jill,

I'm not Shelley, but I can answer your questions. If the # symbol
isn't used, yes, the braille number would still be preceded by the braille
number sign, but only one. This is because of the translation of numbers
into braille. A synthesizer says "number 3" when the number is preceded by
a number symbol, but just "three" when it isn't. The reason that you see
two number signs in braille is because the first represents the number
symbol, and the second is inserted by braille translation so that the
braille reader can distinguish the number as a number and not a letter.
Does that make sense?

Mayrie

Shelley, If the number symbol wasn't used, in braille would that show up as
a number preceded by a number sign? How is that read by a synthesizer?

Actually in the land of Braille Transcribing, that is how it is supposed
to show.

Smile. Two number signs indicate that the # symbol is present.

I just do it that way have been for a long time, smile call me cranky.

When written like that, my braille display shows two number signs; isn't
that redundant?

Hi Alison

the way I do it and makes sense to me is the following.

Title of book parenthesis series name, book number with number sign
close parenthesize

For example

Alligators (Nature's Children #1)

That is how I do it and makes it easier to look for the books using
Bookshares current system.

Plus I know they are part of a series where even in my library system
sometimes it can be a guess if they are.

Hi everyone,

I'd like to learn which sort of format you all most like to see series
info written in. As I input data for all the pq books, I'm filling in
a lot
of series titles and book numbers. I usually do it a certain way, but

I
thought I would ask what everyone prefers.

I have a couple of questions for you all, and you may write me on or
off
list with your answers. allisonh@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Keep in mind that I'm not looking to set up any sort of Bookshare
requirement for writing series titles. This is just for my own
personal
knowledge as I work on the pq books. If someone already has a way they

like
to do it, he or she can definitely still do so.

QUESTIONS:
1. Which of the below do you like best?
a. Title (Series Name, then the word series, #1).
b. Title (Series name Book #1).

2. Do you prefer some punctuation after the book title in order to
separate
it from the series info?

3. Do you like when the number sign (#) is inserted before the book
number?

I imagine that I'll likely get a lot of differing opinions, but I'll
try to
go with what's most popular. Remember, this is just for the books
whose
titles I happen to edit, not something that will apply to all titles.

I look forward to your input.

Best,
Allison
