We finally reached 50 species on this last weekend in March, here at the house.
We added eight first-of-year species in the three weeks since we last kept a 
weekend list, including Eastern Phoebe, Brown Thrasher, Purple Martin, Chipping 
Sparrow and Wild Turkey. I thought that the warm, roughly-northbound breeze, 
since Friday, should make more deliveries so, I wasn’t surprised to see our FOY 
Northern Rough-winged Swallow yesterday and FOY Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and Barn 
Swallows, this morning.     
The Short-eared Owls seem to be gone and our glut of wintering Red-tailed Hawks 
has thinned substantially; the ones that we’re seeing appear to be on territory 
and tending nests. Kestrels are visible through the year, here, except when 
tending nests. They must be tending nests because we saw none, in these three 
days. 
The Bluebirds had started a nest very early in one of our boxes, and now have 
stacked a complete new nest, on top of the first, and finally added their first 
egg, yesterday, and a second one, today. The tree swallows have claimed the 
other three boxes and are the ones that are dawdling, this year. There’s a bit 
of nest material in each but, they’re taking their time. 
The Great Horned Owlets spent another day, today, in our yard trees. I wrote, 
yesterday, that I hadn’t seen the adults around except to escort a Cooper’s 
Hawk away, on Friday morning, so, they made a liar out of me this morning. One 
was hanging around one of the babies, until nearly sunrise, then flew to a 
nearby cedar tree, apparently to roost.
