[birdky] Schochoh, Logan Co., weekend list

We counted only 41 species, here at the house, on this dreary weekend. Though 
relatively warm, the weather couldn’t decide between drips and drizzle, 
especially yesterday, which limited time out and about.  
We didn’t count a single Harrier and conditions didn’t allow me to effectively 
scan for Short-eared Owls, either, so we missed both species. That’s hard to 
countenance after the collection we had through mid-January (yes, I know we 
were spoiled).
A Rough-legged Hawk was a nice consolation; it was back on the lonely cherry 
tree where we saw them earlier in the winter. I reported it there yesterday and 
it was back, again, this morning. This morning it was drooping its wings, 
hanging them out to dry, which exposed its light rump in a way that we hadn’t 
seen before (when perched).  
Friday was five weeks since the Great Horned Owls have started incubating. I 
hurried out to check on them, as soon as I got home from work and, when the 
female saw me, she leaned forward in the cavity and eyed me in 
uncharacteristically agitated and suspicious way. That puzzled me but, later, 
it dawned on me that I was wearing a whitish-gray sweatshirt instead of my 
normal muted earthy-tones and that must have seemed abnormal. I also realized 
that that type of sweatshirt is practically the uniform of the farm workers who 
frequent the driveway that passes very near the nest tree and work the fences, 
nearby.  I went back to my regular garb, through the weekend, and she was also 
back to her aloof behavior, treating me like I didn’t exist.
