I wrote this last evening and didn’t address it properly, before sending…
We counted 49 species, here at the house, this weekend.  That’s our best-ever
count for this slot in January. The weather on Friday was a literal blowout;
yesterday started windy but calmed later and today was breezy, partly sunny
early and very cold. We had a hint of a snow dusting this morning.
There was still at least one Palm Warbler lounging around with the Bluebirds,
yesterday afternoon. Palms have been here most days since November and I‘m
concerned about how they will fare through the next couple of frigid days. We
didn't see the Blue birds and their entourage, today. The baths are frozen, so,
there was no stopping in for their afternoon splash.
Our highlight for the weekend was the three Snow Geese that passed, yesterday
morning, flying almost directly into the stiff west wind, then eventually
angling southwest. They were completely silent so, I was fortunate to notice
them. We last saw one here in December 2022, missing them entirely in 2023.
With the approaching cold, I thought today would be a good day to find some
indecisive Sandhills and was not surprised to spot fourteen of them, passing in
the southeast (on a southwest heading) this afternoon.
The Short-eared Owls are visible most evenings, though the incredibly-windy and
unsettled weather, from the Friday wee-hours through Saturday morning, must
have made hunting difficult because they were moving well before sunset,
yesterday.  I have a spot in the east yard where I can scan the north radish
fields or the Trimble Road location, to the south, by pivoting the scope. I was
watching several of them in the south, when an Owl dropped into my scope view
from the behind me, to the north.  I was annoyed because it must have flown
directly overhead but, I didn’t notice until it entered my scope view, several
hundred yards out. This coming intense cold will kill the radishes so, we’ll be
watching to see how that impacts their roosting behavior.
The Great Horned Owls are in day ten of their incubation vigil. There is always
at least one disinterested eye peering back, when I scope the nest cavity.
I didn’t count a Rough-legged Hawk until late this afternoon when I spotted a
single bird over the southeast fields, very near where I saw one each of the
last two Sundays. Debby and I drove out to Conn Road and found two of them,
yesterday.
We counted 23 Cardinals around the feeders this evening! The cold weather
really brings in the birds.
