We counted 46 species, here at the house, this weekend. Like last weekend, 
that’s in line with our past highest counts for these December periods.  The 
weather was lousy yesterday, with wind in the morning and spritzing rain added 
by midafternoon. Today was heavily overcast early but it wasn’t at all hazy so, 
conditions were favorable for sorting through the dozen or so raptors visible 
at any given time, dotting the soybean stubble and nearby trees, to the 
southeast.   
We continue to count Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers nearly every day, which is 
starting to feel odd.  In 2022, we counted our last-of-year Yellow-rump on 
November 8 and Palm on December 3.  Both continue to hang around with the local 
Bluebird gang.
I watched a juvenile Bald Eagle jousting with a Harrier, high over the soybean 
stubble east of the house, yesterday.  I wasn’t sure who was harassing who.  
Then, this evening while I watched for Short-ears, an adult Bald Eagle hurried 
past, heading south toward Red River.
The 17 Short-eared Owls that I reported from Friday evening were a highlight 
but the Rough-legged Hawk that we found this morning was, by far, the most 
exciting find. That’s a life bird for me and finding it here at home made it 
even more special. Obviously it is a house-list first.  It was visible from the 
house literally all day so, Debby and I drove over to get a closer look this 
afternoon.  We got within about 600 yards and managed a better photo that I 
added to the eBird list.  Its behavior is distinctly non-Red-tail, with lots of 
tail movement when perched and an inclination to perch on spindly-thin limbs.  
It also seemed to be trying to steal from the Harriers that were hunting 
nearby, which is not behavior I’ve seen in buteos before.  We’re hoping it 
stays!
