We counted 53 species, here, which is three short of our best-ever for this
late October weekend. Yesterday started cloudy but cleared later; it turned
out lovely, though windy, but the birds were active anyway. Today was rainy or
misty, and windy throughout, which brought a lot of leaves down and gave a
distinct autumn feel, with less bird activity.I counted our first-of-season
Purple Finch, yesterday morning, a female that I heard calling in the pond
thicket. I also spotted a pair of first-of-year Vesper Sparrows, yesterday. I
found them in the same field-edge cherry tree where I photographed one last
November 13. We’re still seeing Yellow-rumped and Palm Warblers but Sparrows
were the real story with nine species counted by noon, yesterday. Today, I
counted at least seven Swamps, eight Savannahs, five Songs, five White-crowneds
and three Juncos. Juncos have been a relative rarity here in recent years.
The only other mentionable were eleven Red-tailed Hawks, today. I counted six
in one scope-sweep of the soybean stubble, east of the house. I linked below
to today’s eBird list with a photo of four of them congregated in the open
soybean stubble, this afternoon (about 1.3 miles out). There was a fifth just
out of frame to the left. There are still many Harriers, which are always in
view but the Red-tails outnumbered them, today. The eBird list also has some
of Debby’s Harrier photos, taken from a window, this morning.
