We counted 53 species, here at the house, this weekend.  That’s four short of 
2020 and three short of last year.  It was a quiet bird weekend. 
We did count our first-of-season American Redstart but that was the only new 
migrant for the weekend—we did add a few, earlier in the week, but they didn’t 
hang around for the weekend.
Oddly, we missed Song Sparrows for the second, possibly third, consecutive 
weekend. We also missed Indigo Buntings, Meadowlarks, and Towhees, which are 
others whose voices often get them on our lists.  No doubt they are here, but 
their late-summer hush hid them this weekend. 
We did have some highlights, including a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk that was 
here both days.  We photographed it resting on the bird feeder, yesterday 
(first eBird link, below).  Two Great Egrets, over the west-woodlot this 
morning, was a nice surprise, as was the roosting Nighthawk that we reported 
this morning (second eBird link, below).  
In non-weekend news…Debby got a photo of our house-list-first Prothonotary 
Warbler on Wednesday. That brings our house-list to 175 species.
