Question: today I saw what looked to be an adult crow with a bright yellow
beak. The bird was shaped like a crow, by itself on the ground, and the size of
full adult crow. Anyone know what the bird might be?

We counted 45 species, here, this weekend. The weather was ugly on Friday
and through yesterday, and the birds were busy, today, seeming to try to make
up for lost time. We counted 40 species just today.
Our first-of-season Purple Finch appeared under the feeders early this
morning and I counted five Sandhills that dawdled past around mid-day, very
high overhead. Other than that, our highlights included the Great Horned Owl
in the woodlot nest cavity and our first-of-year Lapland Longspur that I
reported this morning. I added a link to today’s eBird list. Among other
things, it includes a photo of a Longspur and a photo of the Owl pair that I
found sitting near the top of a tree a the fencerow, southwest of the house,
about twenty minutes after sunset.
Again, this weekend, I found that Merlin is a really helpful resource. This
morning it alerted me to the Horned Larks and Longspurs and, on Friday, it
insisted that it was hearing a Rusty Blackbird. I was aware of the call but
had subconsciously filed it in the generic-and-uninteresting-blackbird
folder. When I finally paid attention and looked for it, I found it in a
small cherry tree along the old pond depression, as though waiting there for
its photo to be taken. However, for weeks, Merlin has been telling me,
consistently, that there’s a Harris’s Sparrow in the pond thicket, among the
herd of White-crowned Sparrows. I’ve sorted through the White-crowns; done
everything but take fingerprints and blood samples and there is NOT a
Harris’s among them. It is definitely lying about the Harris’s.
