Make that 58 species! A short time ago, I heard a Barn Owl squalling in our
neighbor’s old maple trees. While I was standing and marveling at that bizarre
sound, a Great Blue Heron lumbered past, in the twilight.
We counted 56 species this weekend. It’s a well-rounded list, with most of
what we could hope to see here in June.
I was outside well before sunrise, this morning, hoping to hear a Great Horned
Owl. I did hear one to add to my list, but I also heard distant thunder from a
very localized storm that radar showed to be bearing down, oddly, from directly
north. It started to sprinkle well before the storm arrived, so I pulled up a
chair on the porch to listen to the birds and let the shower pass. As I sat
there I realized that I was hearing a Yellow-breasted Chat, singing in the pond
thicket. That’s not a normal sound, here, so scrambled to the middle of the
yard and stood in the sprinkles while recording a minute, or so, of the song.
Everybody else was singing too, and it’s tough to sort it out from the racket,
but I linked to the eBird list, below, in case anyone else wants to try.
Both of our first Tree Swallow broods fledged, successfully, in the last week
and a half, and a different pair has claimed one of the boxes, topped off the
nest and laid three eggs already! Our single Bluebird nest attempt seems to
have failed, though. The female disappeared two weeks ago, but the male
continued to feed the babies. They seemed to be thriving, but then they
vanished, too, late this week. The male is hanging around by himself and
singing quietly. I’ve been hoping to see juveniles, but I’m pretty sure
they’re gone.
I hope this weekend’s heat and humidity are not a preview of our coming summer
weather!
