We counted 62 species, here, this weekend. I don’t really have a precedent for
this time in April, because we’ve often been away over the last weekend. If
the weather had cooperated, it could have been an all-around record breaker,
though. Yesterday morning was okay, but from about 11:00 AM on it rained
steadily. Today was wind-driven mist or sprinkles, until late afternoon. It
was mostly a mess.,
Our most remarkable finds were the FOY Red-shouldered and a number of
also-migrating Broad-winged Hawks, on Friday evening. I also had a Red-tail
that evening, which gave us a never-before three Buteo day. I saw at least six
more Broad-wings, before the rain really kicked in, yesterday morning. I also
saw many migrating Blue Jays, probably 50 or more, along with the many Cedar
Waxwings that I reported yesterday morning. A Chat, for the second consecutive
weekend, was really special.
We counted our FOY Yellow Warbler and Baltimore Oriole, yesterday, and a lovely
male Rose-breasted Grosbeak, at the feeders, this morning. The Orioles are
apparently sipping tulip polar nectar, because the poplars are in full bloom,
now, and that’s the only place I saw and heard them. Each flower has an orange
skirt, which might help to draw Orioles...?
I posted some photos to Flickr, through the weekend, but I’m adding all three
eBird lists too; Friday’s is included only because it has a great recording of
two Red-headeds who were yammering nearby when I went to fill the feeders.
Saturday’s includes some photos and an okay recording of the Chat, and Sunday’s
includes the Rose-breasted Grosbeak and some other regulars.
