We counted 58 species this weekend, which is more than we’ve ever counted here 
on an August weekend.  
I got a good look at a soaring Red-shouldered Hawk, yesterday, and a fly-by 
Kingfisher, this morning.  Both were first-of-year for us.  
A tiny Empid was feeding in the pond thicket, this morning.  I worked to get a 
look at it, and when I finally did, through a small opening in the brush, there 
was an eye with an emphatic eye-ring looking back at me.  eBird did not think a 
Least Flycatcher should be here yet.  
There seemed to be a Gnatcatcher in every tree and bush, this week.  I was 
standing at the kitchen sink, this morning, when one landed on the deck rail 
only about three feet from the window.  
I hadn’t really expected to see Martins this week, but I counted eight on the 
wires to the west of the house, this morning.  Our Tree Swallows are missing 
entirely, but we’re seeing Cliff and Northern Rough-winged, among the Barn 
Swallows, every day now.
