We counted 52 species here this weekend.  Our previous high for the weekend was 
49, counted in 2017.  We counted 46 just today, including our FOS Blue-gray 
Gnatcatcher.  FOS, in this case, happens to be first-of-summer; after a spate 
in the spring (as they head north), we don’t see Gnatcatchers here again until 
July, when I suspect that dispersing juveniles begin to sift back through.  
Rickey Shive actually counted our summer-first on Tuesday, when he was here to 
try for the White-winged Dove.   The dove hasn’t made an appearance since 
Tuesday.
The only other highlight was the Cuckoo, on Friday, which I was fortunate 
enough to spot (I’d guess that 4/5 of records here are by voice only).  Flickr

Our Red-headed and Red-bellied Woodpeckers have been scarce this year.  I 
puzzled about this until it finally dawned on me that the woodlot across the 
field to our west is loaded with fresh ash tree skeletons.  The Woodpeckers 
have abandoned our nearby woodlot for this new smorgasbord.
