We counted 37 species again this weekend, which is 7 short of the same weekend
in 2018.  After the frantic feeder activity during the bitter cold, the feeders
were relatively quiet during this warm weekend.  The Bluebirds were jousting
over the nest boxes, this morning.  At one point, they chased a curious
Starling away.
There were many flocks of mostly Grackles, Redwings, and Cowbirds, overhead,
all weekend.  Yesterday, there were many on the ground in the south field that
were too far out for binoculars.  I’m certain that I could have picked a Rusty
or Brewer’s from among them, but my scope is at the hospital for warranty
service.  Swarovski may have robbed us of species 38 & 39.
Highlights were a single Cedar Waxwing that seemed to have found our abundant
holly berries, much to the chagrin of the resident Mockingbird (who isn’t
interested in sharing).  The other highlight was some Sandhills that passed
over, late yesterday.  I never did see them, though I’m sure they were gliding
north.
It’s four weeks today that I first saw the Great Horned Owl sitting in the nest
cavity.  She was sitting higher and more visible today, in the warmth, but I’m
fairly certain that she’s still on eggs and not owlets…yet.
The Harris’s Sparrow continues to frequent the feeders.  It makes its first
appearance, on most mornings, 15-20 minutes before sunrise.  I also saw it in
the pond thicket, three separate times, today.  Each time it was acting like a
wannabe, on the periphery of the ubiquitous gang of White-crowned Sparrows.
We compared our Logan Co. species lists, with Frank Lyne, this weekend.  We
recorded 59 species, overall, at the two homesteads, in January.  Only 36 of
those were on both lists, leaving 23 species that were seen by one, or the
other, but not both.  It’s amazing what a difference there is in the few miles
between us, in relatively similar habitat.
