We counted 53 species this weekend.  That’s our highest count since early May, 
and the first time since the first weekend in June that we counted more than 
48.  We had five Swallow species again, including a single Martin that sat 
among the Tree and Barns, on the wire near the house, this morning.  The 
Chimney Swifts fed among the Swallows, low over the yard, in way we haven’t 
seen before.  It was odd to see them coursing back and forth, at face level, 
and so close.   
This afternoon, I glimpsed an Empid in the pond thicket that had a conspicuous 
eye-ring.  It was feeding within the low trees, so I never did get a photo.  
There’s been a family group of Orchard Orioles here all week, along with at 
least one Yellow Warbler.  Gnatcatchers are plentiful now.
Other highlights included a Wood Duck flyover, last evening, and our Bluebirds, 
which are escorting their newly-fledged second brood around the neighborhood.  
Other birds that I saw feeding fledged young included Thrashers, Field 
Sparrows, Barn Swallows, Red-wings, Carolina Wrens and Robins. 
I posted a half decent photo of a Great-crested Flycatcher that was hunting in 
the pond thicket, this morning.
