We counted 43 species this weekend, with the snow apparently still adding to 
our diversity.  Highlights…lots of them:   We counted our FOS Purple Finch 
yesterday (Flickr link below).  The Barn Owl that I reported yesterday, of 
course.  There were still two Fox Sparrows under the feeders, yesterday, but 
the snow is completely gone today, and so are the Fox Sparrows.  I found an 
American Tree Sparrow feeding in a bare yard patch, yesterday, mixed into a 
mixed flock of Song and Savannah Sparrows (Flickr link below).  I was surprised 
to see Horned Larks in the back field, this morning, even with the snow cover 
gone.
I’d been fretting about the Bluebirds with the recent ice, followed by 
persistent intense cold, but I was relieved to see all six of our local troop 
on the utility wire, yesterday afternoon.  I’ve also been wondering about the 
Great Blue Herons, which must have been under stress with the extended 
freeze-up.  I noticed their tracks on the pond thicket paths, several times 
this week, including tracks made yesterday morning in the rotting snow (Flickr 
link follows).  I guess they’re “mousing”, since their normal food sources are 
frozen.  The tracks looked absurdly large, even next to my size 13 boot prints 
(I didn’t actually see or hear it, so it didn’t make the list).
Robins have been very scarce here recently, but yesterday there was a flock of 
at least 50 here.  I managed to get ~15 of them in one photo, right at dusk, 
last evening (photo link follows).
