We counted 39 species this weekend.  That’s the first time since early March 
that we’ve counted less than forty, and means that we’re approaching the winter 
doldrums.  
The Brewers Blackbirds that I posted about, early this afternoon, were a 
highlight.  I got a look at another, larger flock, that stopped in the trees 
closer to the house, later this afternoon.  I got better looks this time, but 
no photos.  There were Redwings mixed in, but I’d still guess that there were 
40-50 Brewer’s.  
Also, we watched a Sapsucker hanging nearly upside down, while eating 
persimmons, this afternoon.   I was envious; I love persimmons, but this 
particular tree is ~40 feet tall and always produces a great crop…only at the 
top.
Turkey Vultures were scarce this weekend, but Black Vultures are really 
gathering here now.  There were many times that I could see dozens of them in 
the air, over the SE fields, during both days.  
I nearly had a Bobwhite collide with me this afternoon, as it was being chased 
by the Cooper’s Hawk.  This juvenile Cooper’s is increasingly tolerant of me 
and it was apparently sitting out-of-sight in a shrub, in the pond depression.  
It startled me because of the sudden explosion of movement and the hawk 
chattered just as the quail buzzed past me.  I’ve never heard a Cooper’s do 
that before…really neat! 
I posted photos (taken yesterday) of a female Hairy and female Downy 
Woodpecker, taken a few minutes apart, from the same scope position and in 
nearly the same position under the suet cake.  Links follow:
