Hello Christine,

I have been trained as a research scientist. I can handle statistics with a fair amount of ease. Personal opinions never carry much weight with me. Sure, I might gather a few if I were interested in starting a contracted piece of research, in order to start some hypothesis generation. But until somone puts up some money, my forte will be criticism of the research methods, data, and analyses on the way to conclusions.

I have had 7 or is it 8 careers now. If technical writing falls in a heap, I won't be the least worried - I'll move on to another. Or, I'll retire.

Much of the discussion about your topic has been at the production level, with little hints about perceptions of what the market wants - but little actual knowledge, as supported by real data, of what the market needs. I saw a similar personal wailing and gnashing of teeth among teachers when I was at TAFE - no sense of what the market needed at all. 'I feel' and 'I perceive' are not data - they are the stuff of journalists' 'features'.

Brian.

Christine Kent asked:

Brian and Terry, what about the topic? Does it warrant discussion? Do you think that our industry is under threat or that we in any way need to adapt to survive?
