Indeed and it should be also pointed out that Dave Hall is a missile guy who
was generally dealing with solids when he provided us with that piece of
wisdom... so a det of a solid is obviously going to be somewhat more exciting
than a liquid unless one of your primary fluids contains a significant quantity
of bond energy like N20 or acetylene. LOX and RP1 need to be mixed pretty
homogenously to provide conditions for a det to propagate.
It also should be pointed out that piston engine "knocking" is detonation, but
the density of the mixture is low enough to not disintegrate the engine
although it is harmful to the exposed engine components.

I've also had a detonation on a test stand, and the test stand and engine were
still there. Detonations aren't magic, and it's possible to have a small one.

When you have a test-stand explosion you can tell the difference
between a mere explosion, and a detonation easily. In the former case,
there'll be burnt, and perhaps mangled, wreckage. In the latter,
you can no longer find the test-stand :) :)
