Some quick testing of running Arachne in real mode (for some reason that only
occured to me now and not 5 hours go) has assured me that the problem most
likely lies with my network. What exactly, I don't know.

How did you determine the problem is with your network? Does Arachne run
without connecting to
anything?

As for using an autoexec.bat and config.sys that maximize memory, I don't
know
how that's done. Nor am I sure it would be necessary, as my system was
originally a low end XP machine. Although there may be something I'm missing
as I'm not exactly a tech guru when it comes to DOS systems.

Sam was referring to the 640k ram dos barrier. How much free memory available
below that is important
regardless of whether your machine has hundreds of megabytes of physical ram.

And one thing that absolutely befuddle me is that my Config.sys is completely
blank when I open it in edit. Is there supposed to be something in there?

Display the contents of your autoexec.bat file, please.

Anyway, back on topic. I cant use a modem because I have neither modem nor
phone line so i'm stuck with ethernet. It works, I've gotten Firefox and Lynx
running with it. So i'm sure that's not the issue.

Ethernet is fine, are you connecting to a router? If not, what? You mean
Firefox and Lynx in Windoze
which is running a different tcp/ip network stack than dos? Which type of
internet connection are you
using?

When my packet driver loads up it gives me an IP or something. Is this part
of
what I'm supposed to use for a manual connection?

Packet driver should load from autoexec.bat, post that file and we will see.

do you have?
