I think you got it right there ray. The attraction of AOL is simplisitty, all in one client which is a webrouzer, a mail client, an instant messanger, a search engine ETC...

Jiilian, funny you should mention AOL, which I've never used. I keep hearing that it's very hard to get it off your computer once you've installed it. Wonder why that should be?

I've never been sure what the attraction of AOL is, but seemingly some people like the integrated interface, so maybe that answers the question! Anyway, if you want to read a an anti-AOL rant, take a look at:

Why you shouldn't be using AOL http://www.computertim.com/howto/article.php?topic=general&idn=25ay

Bit of a plug for MSN for those who want to switch, so that's maybe where he is coming from.

I'm quite confident about using Jaws. Not sure whether I can call myself
advanced or not. What i'm not so confident about doing is knowing whether
software that I download may in fact upset my computer. See I heard a lot
of stories about AOL software. People were saying that it didn't work with
Jaws, but when they took it off their computers, they didn't work properly
afterwards. I certainly don't know how to repair any damage that might be
caused by something like this, and I don't have any contacts for people who
can fix machines either. This one is second hand, which is why it's so out
of date and junk really. I couldn't and still can't afford to buy a new
one, and getting this one fixed is pricey. so I worry every single time
something goes wrong. This may change in the future, but till now I have to
take care of what I've got. Having said all that, i will try things out
when I can, though I don't keep up to date really with what's out there
technology wise. Firstly 'cos I know I won't be able to afford much of it,
and I've never been pointed in the direction for doing so. At least here
though I can ask what is accessible and what isn't, and find the wealth of
knowledge and experience on the technology front mind blowing and staggering
indeed.

I personally always try out new software and definitely don't wait for
scripts to come out, but I'd also consider my self quite advanced jaws
user
and I feel pretty confident using mouse cursors and other feature that
makes
software usage easier without any scripts. I also am a person who likes
to
try out new things when it comes to software and get quite excited when I
hear about new things that I might be interested in. As the original
subject of this thread was about podcasting, when I read about it, Ipodder
was the first client I came across and I didn't wait or didn't ask around
from others to see how and if it works, I downloaded it, my point is that
if
it didn't work with jaws then I could have easily uninstall it and look
for
something else, but I personally was quite pleased with Ipodder and I'm
used
to it and I like it. I'm only using this as an example. I understand how
some users might be afraid to use new software because maybe they are not
sure how to use things like jaws cursor, but in general I'd encourage
people
to try out new things, usually you have not much to lose, if you're not
sure
how to use it once you downloaded it, there are plenty of places where you
can ask for help including this list. If you still have problems, you can
usually just uninstall software, so apart from bit of time, you haven't
really got much to use.

And may I second Brian's point. It does seem though that some people
simply
will not RTM! And maybe that's where Brian, and others, in their
professional role come in.

It seems to me that rather than waiting for scripts set files, or maps,
people should equip themselves to deal with new programs or minority
applications. Yes, it can be time consuming but really less so when one
does get down to it.

I am not saying, of course, that programmers don't have a responsibility
to
make apps easier to access or to use; also website developers, for that
matter.

I'd also say that if you are buying an exspensive screen reader, you
might
as well invest the time learning all its facilities.
