I had a similar problem but have finally managed to get it sorted. My problem was that the e-mail I used when I originally set up my account over 10 years ago is no longer in use. Fortunately, the other night, a particular word came into my head which I thought I would see if that was the password. Hi Janet.
It is still possible to sign in to your Skype account using your old Skype ID, however you may be asked in future to create a Microsoft account and merge your account details. For now, if you go to the Skype homepage and click on the forgotten password link, you'll be able to enter your email address to reset your Skype password and recover your username.

Hi to all who have helped thanks very much.  When I installed skype I keep
getting get a microsoft account and can't get rid of it so for the time
being I have uninstalled skype until I can find out how to do it properly.
I used to have gw connect the free version but can't remember my username or 
password, which doesn't really help.  I will give it another go some other
time when I have sorted everything out first.
