I can't believe this thread is going on so long.
It sounds like Billy has the same cable as me. You don't get mains cables with 3.5mm jack plugs at the end or you would be electrocuted. If it does indeed have a 3.5mm plug on the end then it will have a transformer built into the plug, otherwise known as an AC adaptor.
you can either buy a single socket extension cable which wont' be much to carry.
Or buy a 3.5mm male to female extension lead, which you can also get from Maplin.

Billie, an "L shaped adaptor with a pin"?  Surely more than one pin?
Can you feel some small oblong holes in the L shaped end?  Or, can you
feel some pins in the hole the L shaped thingy goes into?

On my Classic, the receptor for the lead is situated at the back of
the machine with two thin rectanglular pins  within the socket
receptor and the lead with a moulded plastic plug on it going via a
couple of metres of mains lead to a thirteen amp plug.  You can only
place this sort of plug in the machine one way round, with angled
corners on the plug going towards the top as you push it home.

All this said, Ive long lost track of the original two pin plug that
went into my classic, and am using the sort of lead that comes with
kettles and other appliances, such as some audio equimpment.

As Andy says, the simplest thing is to get to Maplin's or somewhere
like that with this lead and see if they've a longer one, or simply
get an extention mains lead.

Pity is we cannot easily excange pictures on this list, otherwise the
description of the lead would not be in doubt.  Does puzzle me that
people keep refereing to a figure of eight lead, cus mind aint one of
those!  Whichever it is it's not complicated and I think you'd have to
try hard to blow the thing up!

One end has an ordinary 13 amp plug which plugs into a power mains

sounds to me as if Billy might have an American or Canadian mains

lead

with his Classic as the two pin plug he describes is common with US
designed equipment.  Obviously that could be plugged into a
shaver-type adaptor, that's if I'm right.

My RNIB supplied Victor Classic player came with a mains lead
terminated in a 13 amp plug, no doubt with a 3 amp fues in the plug.
The two pin plug socket on mine is physically in design the kettle
standard sort of appliance leaed, but the Victor Classic isn't
earthed, as I think is standard in North America, so carries two

pins,

not three.  (This doesn't effect safety folks, so don't get

concerned

on that score!)  As I've said, you can plug in a standard kettle

type

appliance leadwhere the earth connection goes simply unused and no
harm at all in that.

This doesn't solve Billy's problem really as I think it is the

length

of the mains lead he's concerned about.  As already suggested the

best

and easiest solution is the ubiquitous extention lead.  No end of
these available at Maplin and the like, in two metre lengths, which
should be enough.

Must say at the end of an over long post that, for me, the Victor
Stream with a good portable speaker is the better solution for me

now.

Much more portable, which is why its going with me to my sister's

over

christmas.

Well, it certainly doesn't require anywhere near 15 amps. The player
probably draws around an amp at most, so you can get away with using
quite a
long extension cable which would be the most straightforward

solution.

extensions is that I am

I have a feeling that there are electrical regulations in
place which prevent suppliers from providing equipment with
mains cables above 2 - 3 metres.  Indeed I've just spent the
last 20 minutes or so going through some of our supplier
catalogues, and have not been able to find anything
suitable.

I suggest a normal extension cable might be your best bet.
