Justin, Good for you to take this work placement and I do hope that it works out well in the coming days. You will gain confidence and also probably skill, so hang in there and keep us updated! -- Carol carol.pearson@xxxxxxxxxxxx -----Original Message----- From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Justin R Sent: 24 August 2004 20:42 To: access uk post Subject: [access-uk] first day at work placement hi everyone, yep, it was my first day at my work placement with Ipswich Borough Council's Economic Development team. Well, it's been a difficult day as, for most of it, i didnt' get supplied any headphones at all! I'm still waiting for the ones I ordered online myself. anyway, I had an induction with one of the staff members who asked, if I had everything I needed computer wise. i mentioned that I'd need the headphones for speech output so I can have webpages, articles red to me and, I can have red back what I've written down. She wasn't sure if the Sound Card had been enabled on my computer but, she'd have to check. I was given a work station with a 14" monitor with all the usual stuff but, not a lot of desk space. a bit cluttered in my view. anyway, it was very hard having to read several pieces (one for a poster I'm doing) just using all the zoomtext features without speech. i had to considerally slow down app reader to a crawl to try and keep up with the highlighter around the text, even then, i had to go back often and repeat each sentence near enough. The lighting made it hard to see the screen. doing posters, designing them and so fourth is very hard a small screen with magnification. I had to reduce magnification meerly for looking at the layout but, that was hard to do given the lighting and so on. I'd have to bump up magnification if I wanted to type anything as, I couldn't see what I was doing for the life of me! so, fortunate I hadn't had much reading to do today! I did get the headphones, an "hour" before my first day was over. Well, i got to try out the headphones. at first, no sound... great! sound card not enabled? I played with the volume control once i found it and.... thankfully, there was sound coming out. So, I configured the speech finally and I'm glad as, it's a god send given the size of monitor and the nature of work I'm doing right now. So, it's OK really from what I'm given technology wise. there may be hard copy written material where I might have to use my magnifier, otherwise, it's all computer based work. Lets hope I get something more interesting to do than poster designing <groan>. Justin ** Going on holiday and want to halt messages?
