Eleanor,
In order to solver the issue with the preview pain, you need to go into the 
"view menu" in Outlook express. Arrow down on "lay out", hit enter and then tab 
down till you hear a check box "show preview pain" and uncheck the box, hit 
"apply" and then "ok". I think that should solve your problem. You may need to 
restart OE before the settings take effect.
