[access-uk] Re: Newspapers and magazines - response from RNIB

Well, from my point of view as a customer of the email service, I think that
either this has been handled particularly badly or my news-hound nose and ears
have had a series malfunction. the first I heard of any of this was two weeks
ago when we were all asked by email to offer our services as testers of the new
service. Prior to, and following that, I've had no direct indication from RNIB
that the email system was to be ended arbitrarily and suddenly. Having offered
to take part in the testing, I discovered that I did not have the required
password or user name to get on to the site. I was given what I understood to
be temporary ones for the new site. but in the event, I've not had the time to
go to the site. Was there a time when Former Heathfield customers were
consulted about the satisfaction with the existing service? Were we ever told,
asked or consulted about proposed changes? Were we offered any information as
to the ongoing validity of existing subscriptions and the way these would work
in the future? I have no memory of any of this happening. Indeed, as recently
as February I recede information (in print as usual) about TNAUK Christmas
cards for next year. This is just another example of how RNIB has ridden
rough-shod over its customers and i think it's time they were brought to
account for it.

Hi,

Please find below a response from Clive Gardiner, Head of Service, responsible
for our digital services.

Yesterday's launch of the new way to access electronic newspapers and magazines
from RNIB is just the first step on a journey to increase the access for people
to a range of reading material in the future.

The service from NTNM has become unsustainable due to its reliance on software
packages that are no longer supportable. We needed to create a new way of
offering newspapers and magazines which will be both sustainable and can be
built on and adapted in the future.

Due to the size of this undertaking, and the time constraints we have had to
work in, we could not offer everything we, or our customers, might have liked
to have had available on day one. One of these options was receiving content
directly via email. Even though this offering was not available, we felt that
customers would still be able to find titles through the website, and by doing
so, may come across other titles that they may not have previously been aware
of. The future offering will be shaped by the feedback we receive and we would
encourage you to send all feedback to
rnibsolutions@xxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:rnibsolutions@xxxxxxxxxxx> - this is the only
guarantee that your feedback will be received.

For anyone experiencing any technical difficulties accessing the new website,
please contact our Technology Information Service by calling +44(0)20 7391 2037
or emailing ict@xxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:ict@xxxxxxxxxxx>

In addition, Nature and New Scientist are still available. Any editions
produced after 1 April will be available via the new website. If you are
looking for issues dated prior to 1 April, they can be obtained through the
NTNM website, as described in the communication issued to all subscribers.

As with any change, we recognise that it may take a little time to get used to
things, and we will endeavour to support you as much as possible through this
transition to a new way of accessing your newspapers and magazines.

Regards
Clive Gardiner

Hi Steve

I haven't used the new service yet, so can't comment either way. I hadn't
realised there would be more formats available. It will obviously be
irritating, to say the least, for those who receive their content via Email.
We don't, but I hope the value for money continues to be the case.

Kind regards,

Hi,

Blimey it hasn't even started yet and people are moaning about it. Give 'em
a break.

All the best

Steve

I totally agree with you Jackie, its the most stupid thing. My first
worry is of course, not being in the UK, I hope RNIB will still allow
us international people to subscribe. But I think its crap what
they've done for a few reasons:
1. The new web address doesn't really mean anything, its longer and
more complicated.
2. They aren't going to be sending out on emails anymore, I think
that's just an excuse not to have kept the email system going. Are we
now to be expected to go and look ever so often to check if there are
new publications?
3. Once you do actually log in, you have to go through millions of
links just to get to the file of the paper you want anyway.
And New Scientist and Nature aren't available anymore apparrently. Its
like they've gone backwards, not forwards!

Why change what isn't broken? Could someone please explain?
