Last Saturday morning I was birding Prentice Park on the west edge of Ashland. While on the boardwalk at the "duck pond" I noticed a duck a little smaller than the usual mallards. I saw the black-tipped blue beak and immediately thought WIGEON, although somewhat unusual for this time of year. The overall plumage was a reddish brown. I also noted a dark area around the eye. I took a couple poor photos and the bird disappeared into the cattails. My daughter was getting married in the afternoon and the photos were the furhtest thing from my mind. Late Thursday evening, while processing some other photos, I remembered the Prentice Park bird and sent the photos to Ryan Brady for ID help. Yesterday morning he called me at work and said he was pretty sure it was a male EURASIAN WIGEON in eclipse plumage. The photos were also reviewed by a couple other knowledgeable birders who came to the same conclusion. Ryan searched for the bird late in the morning and I looked twice in the early and late evening without success. I searched 3 times over the course of 3 hours this morning again without success. There is a good amount of hidden open water in the park, so I'm not giving up yet, but my hopes that it is still here are dwindling. Upon checking the early/late arrival dates, I found there are no Wisconsin sightings of EUWI from late June until mid-October.
