Hi all,
The whole family took a hike out to the tip of Picnic Point today.  We did NOT
find the male Barrow's Goldeneye, but I did find a bird that I believe is a
FEMALE Barrow's Goldeneye.

Field Marks Noted:
A female Goldeneye with a bill that was completely orange except for the nail
which was dark brown.

The head structure was different than the neighboring Common Goldeneyes:
Steeper forehead and what Sibley calls a "longer mane" on the back part of the
head.  The top of the head was relatively flat--almost parallel with the
water.

The rest of the body was gray with the exception of 2 rectangular white regions
near the bird's rear.

I did not study the structure of the bill, but according to p. 99 of Sibley it
should be a good fieldmark if anyone else goes out to study the bird.

The bird was diving frequently, but should be easy to observe from the very tip
of Picnic Point.  I would recommend taking a scope to study the bill
structure.

Other species observed:
Ruddy Duck-1
Thayer's Gull-1 (first basic/pale end of the continuum)
B. Eagle-2
Scaup (many)
Bufflehead-1
C. Goldeneye--about 10
C. Merganser
Canvasback--3 or 4
Canada Geese many
Brown Creeper
lots of Coots
no sign of the Screech Owl

P.S. The starlings in my neighborhood are already imitating E. Wood-Peewees can
spring be far away?
