I'm glad to know someone else who had this experience. Last October I was
running errands in my cityish/suburban neighborhood. It's an old neighborhood
with large trees, but by no means rural and no wetland or open space for quite
a ways. Lake Michigan is about a mile east of us. I saw something move in my
neighbor's tree, and was completely completely completely (did I mention
completey) shocked to see a bittern in the tree. Standing with his head facing
up like bitterns do. And just as I reached into my camera bag to get it out, he
flew off. Oh how I wished I had a photo, or a witness... but your experience
makes me feel a little less crazy. Thanks for sharing. :)

I have two pictures of it hidden behind some leaves...I continue to laugh at
this one...hahaha, an Am. Bittern in my yard.  If anyone wants to see the
pictures I can send them.

I looked out my window and saw a large bird land in a tree about 15 feet
from my office window - a densely wooded area that's good for warblers.  I
assumed it was a red-tailed hawk, but something seemed off.  So my next
thought was a young turkey as it stretched out its neck.  Finally, with
binoculars in hand to get a good look it turned out to be an American
Bittern!  This is in a wooded area, no marsh within miles, but Lake Michigan
is nearby.  Hahaha, much easier to spot this guy when he's 20 feet up in a
tree just outside a window rather than hiding in reeds.

Seriously weird and a yard bird I never expected to get.  I'm still laughing
about this one.
