I didn't used to be... Here is the way it went down: * it was fiscal month end * the CFO needed to perform some monthly input of sensitive figures before our payroll tax transfer * The router that feeds accounting failed * we had no backup equipment * a permanent replacement was 4 days away * he h ad to truck over to our department and use our "spare" (read: "filled-with-junk") cubical to do his entry * he asked me what it would take to make sure this never happened again * I exaggerated and told him about $1500 in backup equipment (1 hub, 1 switch, and an extra hard drive and 4 NIC's to turn my test workstation into an instant router) * he agreed it would be worth it and signed a requisition * I spent a week or so building and rebuilding that machine as an RRAS server, and backing up the RRAS config for each one. Now, if a hub or switch goes down, I have a quick replacement. If a router goes down, I can have this machine ghosted and running as a router in less than 15 minutes. Now if I could get him to sign off on an extra HARDWARE router, I would be all set... I'd be redundant to the gills! I hope this helps a little, Glenn Sullivan, MCSE+I MCDBA David Clark Company Inc. -----Original Message----- From: Chris Berry [mailto:compjma@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, December 11, 2002 1:15 PM To: windows2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [windows2000] Re: Your uptimes >From: "Sullivan, Glenn" <GSullivan@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> >Properly set up hub/switches/routers should never go down. Well, if they never go down, why do you need a backup? *grin* All I can say is that your budget must be better than mine as I'm forced to pretty much use equipment until it falls apart in a nasty way.
