Sounds like a virus to me, get a trial version of McAfee and run it. Also, I was at my mom's this weekend and she had the same crap. I ended up manually removing all the stupied search toolbars from her computer and it ran great. Some toolbar called search.exe was killing that machine. His home computer was acting up so he ran ad-aware and scanned for a virus etc. Ad-Aware cleaned a bunch of junk off of there and so did the antivirus. He is running XP Pro. Now, every time he selects an item in the start menu or double clicks an icon, the background goes away, the icons disappear, it hangs up, then they all come back but the program never runs. To me, that says that explorer.exe is crashing. But I am not sure why. Can anyone think of a virus that could cause that behavior. It sounds virus like to me.
