I seem to have started this thread with a posting on 2 blacks over Rt. 50 in Roslyn near the Iwo Jima Memorial. I think the real answer is that suburban sightings are not unusual, but I think genuinely urban -- everything is buildings & streets -- would be. as others have noted, the immediate proximity of open habitat makes the sighting I posted, well, marginial. so seeing them over your neighborhood is not unexpected. and just coincidently I saw two over the woods next to the blue lot at Dulles yesterday afternoon, very low, so wonderful views even with luggage in hand.

Excuse this question--I'm a fairly new birder, about a year into it. Are
urban black vulture sightings unusual?  I've seen them in my neighborhood
near Ft. Belvoir, VA. (http://birdlist.blogspot

saw two at 4:30 PM today soaring over the Carlyle section of Alexandria
(across Duke St. from the Masonic Temple and King St. Metro station) less
than a block from passing over the Federal Courthouse. This probably has the
makings of a lawyer joke or two.
