I think what is interesting about the urban vultures is that they
represent a big change in my birding time of about 15 years. In the
early 1990s, when I began birding in my late 30s, you didn't find black
vultures around here -- or at least I didn't -- and generally had to
travel towards the coast to have a good chance.

Just to confirm Chris's point--across the river in DC, I saw a few
Black Vultures from my office window at 18th & D Streets, NW a few
weeks ago. That's the only time I've seen Black Vultures there. Turkey
Vultures, while not especially common in the area, pass through
somewhat more often. Given that the Mall and Ellipse are a fairly large
open area for them to patrol, these sightings may be interesting, but
they don't seem all that unusual.
