This evening after work a walk on the Fredericksburg canal path was
delightful. The smell of locust blossoms filled the air while the path was
strewn with them. A hen Mallard and 7 ducklings fed in the almost silted in
pond. Three not so Solitary Sandpipers and a Killdeer kept their distance
from each other. Several times I witnessed a sandpiper hovering in mid-air
before finding just the right spot to land. Two families of Wood Ducks, one
with five, and one with 6 ducklings paraded along the canal while other
groups of adult Wood Ducks consisting mostly of males paddled around.
Perhaps more hens are sitting on eggs or ducklings hidden away.
