I agree with you all. I’m was actually quite frustrated to see it there at that
price, but couldn’t figure what a working PET is worth these days. (Though I’m
guessing you can get one for $500 from a private seller and feel better for it.)
Value Village does “give” a very small amount of money to a partner charity
based on weight of donated goods. Which doesn’t make a lot of sense seeing they
make a lot of money from jewellery. Fortunately the metal PET weighs a ton! :)
I have it on first-hand account that Salvation Army throws out the lion’s share
of what’s donated to them. I get they can’t display everything but I’ve watched
them dump hundreds of pounds of perfectly good donations into the landfill.
Unless you’re donating quality clothes or valuable hard goods, don’t expect it
to end up anywhere but the trash.
Really, there’s no truly ethical place to donate these days. Sad times for us
thrift store junkies!
