Stephen and others, I have daily bird records since January 1, 1994, with the vast majority of my time during this period having been spent in Greene County. Although Greene has a large amount of low-elevation agricultural or semi-agricultural land that offers a lot of what appears to be good shrike habitat, and although I have spent at least part of over 2000 days (a conservative estimate) in habitat that might be suitable for shrikes, I have seen only a very small number--many of which I've found during repeat visits to the same sites. My high count was five birds--a family unit of two adults and three juveniles--on July 8, 2000. I almost never see more than one shrike in a given day. I do not necessarily find them in every month of the year, and I find very, very few in Greene County in June and July. I might be willing to believe that there are as many as a handful of nesting pairs, but this would be a generous concession. Even wintering birds aren't at all likely in apparently good habitats. I can't imagine how anything approaching 150 pairs could be found, even if an army of birders had complete access to all the private land in the "great valley" of Greene County. Loggerhead Shrike is disturbingly scarce.
