Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton County 9/12/06 The water level is about 16" lower than usual, which makes it look almost dried up. You can look at the fence or the boat dock to see the change. The pond to the south-east of the marsh is also about 16" lower than usual. The water falls each fall, but this year is worse than usual. The part of the marsh north of the gravel road is about 6" higher than usual. The bulldozing below the culverts probably has not affected the water level in the main marsh. Least Bittern: Betty Wampler reported a Least Bittern September 9; they are not easy to find this time of the year (young not flying well, adults molting?) Great Egret: 10 Green Heron: 2 Night Heron: 1 immature, not seen well enough to say which Wood Duck: 15+, all ages, full sized Shore Birds: 2-3 groups of 20-30 Killdeer and other shore birds.
