Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN
April 28, 2005
Four hours wading, north side

American Bittern: 1
Least Bittern: 1 male, 2 female, 2 nests, 5 eggs each,
seem to be1 each of the 2 Least Bittern personalities noticed last year.
A: female leaves the nest before I get close, sneaks away, no male present,
young leave prematurely if I get too close, seem to do OK anyway
B: female stays on nest, threatens if I get too close,
young stay in nest until mature, threaten me or camera if too close
male stays close and squawks and threatens
Green Heron: 2

Wood Duck: pair
Mallard: including female with at least 4 young not from any of the 7 nests so
far observed.
Blue-winged Teal: 9, most seem paired and location specific, look for nest

Cooper's Hawk: 2 performing extensive maneuvers staying 5 ft apart, courting?

American Coot: 0
Virginia Rail: 5+ heard
Sora: 5+ heard, 3-4 seen

Solitary Sandpiper
